Philadelphia’s always been well known for its melodic lush instrumentaltional exports in the shape of the early 1970s soul acts like Billy Paul or The Delphonics. What it’s not been quite so well known for is it’s lush instrumentational exports in the world of dubstep and bass music. Aside from Starkey and his Seclusiasis crew there doesn’t seem to be much from Philly and its surrounding counties. Or that’s what I thought, until recently…

Some of you may be aware of a producer called Autopilot. A lovely chap by the name of Wes, who has been slowly building a both constant and consistent collection of releases on his Life After Math digital imprint. not only are his own productions spot on, but his selections for the label seem to be too. Having been aware, but not fully immersed in the releases, it’s taken me a little while to catch-on, but call me a convert. After listening to the slightly different “The Mountain EP” by Kochlear and its ambient guitar meanderings I’ve been keen to hear more, and low and behold what should arrive in my inbox today, but a new Life After Math EP – Tuff by RDubz – If you can sidestep the bizarre artist name (yeah, I know… I can talk!) the EP is a really great collection of deep and interesting dubstep/bass music.

My personal recommendation is Autopilot’s own remix of the title track Tuff – but best check the whole thing. For only $5 you’re paying more for a round of 2 drinks most places. Do yourself, and the community a favour, and buy some new music from this man.
