Krts releases his long awaited (by me anyway) EP "Hold On" on 12" and digital, through Project Mooncircle. Soulful vibes!

I had the real pleasure of meeting Kurtis Hairston this Summer on a trip to New York City, and a nicer guy I am still to meet. He was friendly, wonderfully down to earth and clearly in to music with soul. This much however, you can likely gather from checking his new EP.

PMC087 – Krts “Hold On” EP snippet by Project Mooncircle

Released today on Project Mooncircle, “Hold On” is a masterpiece of swirling soul grooves, and low-slung intricate beats, swaying from chopped clarinet, to organs and synths, from soothing vocal snips, to woody textures and beats.

The whole EP fits very well together, and I particularly like the artwork too. A great touch.

You can pick the EP up now at most good online retailers, and I believe there might be physical copies on 12″ to buy too.

Glistening sparkly synths and erratic chunky beats and bass. it can only be Hudson Mohawke's new EP "Satin Panthers" set to drop soon on Warp.

It’s been a while now since Hudson Mohawke dropped his album on us from a great height, and scared the living bejesus out of me with his fruity take on beats and bass. All twinkly spangly synth work and out of control brass parps.

With his new EP he’s bringing us more of what felt so good about his album. The sort of sounds you’d never expect to really enjoy, but somehow twisted and warped in to a bizarre listening experience that seems ultimately unforgettable.

I’m a fan of “Cbat” – almost purely for the smooth brass horns at the start before it drops in to some wonky, nightmareish take on a Neptune’s beat (which Tinie Tempah has snapped up to spit over on a forthcoming release). That said, I think as a whole track “All Your Love” is my favourite for it’s driving drums, and lovely melody/vocals.

Fusing the sound of contemporary American R&B and the still-present spectre of classic UK rave may sound like an obvious proposition, but nowhere has it been executed so well as here. The dizzyingly huge melodies of “All Your Love” and “Thunder Bay” recall euphoric morning hours in sweaty warehouses while “Octan” opens the EP by giving a glimpse of what it might sound like if Jean-Michel Jarre happened onto some ketamine in Daft Punk’s studio. An unequivocal focal point, “Thunder Bay” adventurously takes a psychedelic marching band riddim on a euphoric ride through dirty south hip-hop stylings and hands-in-the-air synth breakdowns.

The Satin Panthers EP drops on 1st August.

It seems that dusty atmospherics and ethereal melodies shining through woodblock hits and crispy broken garage beats is all the rage these days. I’m not complaining, per say – I love a lot of it, but I can’t help thinking about whether these producers would sound the same, had our good friend Will Bevan not done what he did (and still does).

At the end of the day, I guess its not important, since it should always be about the music, and so without further chat, I present to you the forthcoming EP from Buck UK and Mirror State (humerously referred to in one o the new comments as the new Rooflight and Ghostek! haha) I actually love what these guys are doing and I think it’s a step onward from Bevan’s crackly stuff – I think they’re starting to push the sound with more melody, some cleanrer sounds etc – it’s lovely stuff.

Enjoy…

So this morning, I got a nice email from the people at This Way Up Agency, informing me of a free EP from a live 5-piece dubstep band called CODA. Naturally intreagued, after enjoying the offerings from the likes of the Submotion Orchestra, I thought I’d check it out.

Off I go to CODA’s website. So far, so good. Now, in the download box I’m asked to enter my email. I can just about fathom this, since I understand the value of email marketing, and if the band are good I don’t mind getting their updates. I duly add my address, and click to agree to the terms, then I hit the “Get PIN” button. Seems a bit odd, but OK.

I’m presented with a “Thanks for using Music Pin” message – thanks for using what now? Where’s my link? I’ve been sent an email? OK I can handle that, I presume there’s a download link inside. So I jump back over to my email, and check for an incoming mail. One arrives – with images blocked (as is standard for Thunderbird these days) and there’s a pin, and a pretty small link to the music-pin site for redeeming. OK, let’s see if I can enter this pin and get this music.

Back I go to my browser, expecing a big shiny “enter code” and redeem button – but alas, this new site has yet another form. No email pre-population, and different fields this time. Now Music Pin want my name, email, city, country, date of birth, gender, pin and another confirmation of terms and conditions. Now, tell me this isn’t essential? I duly fill out this oversized form with details that I KNOW are going to get used and abused, I’m just hoping there’s an unsubscribe for one of the lists I’ve been added to. I don’t even know if I like CODA yet, and I’ve already given them two lots of information, in return for nothing.

Anyway – so I fill this out, check the T&Cs just to be sure, and hit the button. Guess what. Another message saying I’ve been emailed a link. Here we go – another email. Is this going to continue ad infinitum? I get the email, right enough – again with no imagesm and a link – Click to redeem free download. So once again, I click the email link and get taken back to the browser. Another window, another photo, the same text again and a download link – finally!

Eventually the goods are here – the zip is downloading as we speak, and provided I don’t need to email anything or fill out a form to open it I’m OK.

I tell you what though. If I come across anyone else using Music PIN, I’ll be avoiding it upon principal. After such a rediculous process to get music that’s free anyway – it just seems like overkill. Now I’m guilty of asking people for their email address, for the new Cut compilation – or asking them to put a tweet out in return for the download link – but I’d like to think it was a much smoother process. Maybe just the one email!

Anyway – rant over. It was a late night last night, and if nothing else, this process has woken me up.

I happen to know that producer extraordinaire Vax is migrating South from his Pennsylvania home, to somewhere slightly warmer down Atlanta way. As a result, the title of his newest release is something I feel like I can get my head around.

Musically this is a very cohesive mix of tracks that are all original productions in their own right, but also flow together well as an album piece. One can only assume this was the intention.

Both interesting to listen to, and enjoyable to have on, this is a cracking release, and one that I was happy to part with some cash for. However for those less inclined to support the burgeoning scene, and struggling artists, Vax has kindly put this up on a “pay what you like” scheme, meaning that not only can you tame your guilty conscience and get some feel-good factor – you can also let Vax know directly, how you feel about his music!

I was alerted to this great EP recently, by Sam, the producer behind Ice Cream Social himself. Hailing from Irvine California he claims to (in his own words) “incorporate emotion and melody into a pop electronic format.” Lately he says he’s been drawing more inspiration from both shoegaze and bass music, which in my books makes for an excellent combination.

So without further ado, I give you his latest free EP “Trilogy” available to download for free at Bandcamp.

I’ve just been chatting to Mekha, a producer based in Mexico. He sent me over a link to an EP he produced a while back, and it immediately struck me as wildly under-rated and over-looked.

His style (based on this EP) covers deep and dub-tech style dubstep. Lots of great sounds, reverbed-out with some great percussion work and some lovely textures. Showing competance with an MC and weightier bass tones on the track Selftaught too.

Having just returned from the USA to knee-deep snow, I felt it would be worthwhile to post some dub-techno to fit with the wintery landscapes. There’s nothing more fitting for a snow covered outlook.

So I present to you Quantec’s new EP “Force Vive” containing 3 lush tracks that fit perfectly with his sound, and with the winter. I can’t get enough of Sven’s work – and it’s also worth mentioning at this stage that Modus magazine is about to release the first issue – containing a great interview with the man himself.

Preview the EP tracks here – one – two – three

Buy it at Boomkat

Silverback Recordings are on the verge of releasing Jack Dixon’s first EP, and let me tell you it’s well worth listening to. If you like your beats crisp, well constructed, emotional and melodic – Jack is your man.

I have no doubt in my mind that Jacks work is going to be hugely successful. His command of style and finesse is most definitely going to do him some serious favours, and with forthcoming releases on Echodub and Formant, I’d put money on 2011 being the year he steps up and dominates.

DJG is a producer who I’ve grown to like more and ore over the past couple of years with his tracks making now very regular appearances in my DJ sets.

He has just released 2 generously sized EPs through Bandcamp on a “pay what you like” system. it’s a payment system made popular by Radiohead, but more recently has been popular with a lot of independent artists and smaller labels.

In his own words, Dean says “…the majority of these songs have been pulled from various labels and projects over the last three years, for one reason or another. Nearly all of them have been supported by some of the biggest DJs in dubstep. All these songs were written over the last three years, with ‘Doodlebug’ being the oldest (2007) and ‘BC3’ the most recent (about two months ago). These are just songs I still love and feel connected to, and strongly believe in.”

I’d suggest you all go and listen to the tracks, then sort him out with some generous dollar in exchange for some bloody excellent music.
