Broken Bubble present their latest offering from Italian producer Ak0pian. "Melancholic and reflective leads drifting over shimmering ambient soundscapes"

Broken Bubble have been churning out material since their inception in 2011, and it seems that they continue to go from strength to strength. Their latest forthcoming EP is from Italian producer Ak0pian who had previousl released on Echodub as well as Gamma Audio and Idletone.

In Broken Bubble’s words:

Here you’ll find melancholic and reflective leads drifting over shimmering ambient soundscapes, propelled throughout by gently funked-out basslines and delicately minimal garage rhythms. Chillstep is an appropriate tag to use, but these tunes have the invention and emotional resonance to really stand out from the pack.

The 6 originals are accompanied by a euphoric dancefloor re-interpretation from Fedbymachines and a slow house groover by label boss Cogidubnus.”

Sounds good to me!

7. Fields Of Fortune (Fedbymachines Remix)

Fields of Fortune will be out from the usual digital outlets on 13th February.

Evy Jane bring us a smooth, shimmering RnB styled track called Sayso with smouldering cindery vocals and a real nice video.

Evy Jane is the experimental R&B project of Vancouver-based musicians Evelyn Mason and Jeremiah Klein. Drawing from UK bass, gospel, and noise, the partnership yields beat-smart, hyper-textural pop that imparts a sense of fey elegance onto sub-bass juvenile delinquency.

Both Mason and Klein have been involved in the West Coast’s DJ/rave culture for years, each having performed at various festivals, and with Klein having been part of organizing some of Vancouver’s most memorable renegade dance parties.

Cycling through obsessions, but forever attached to pop hooks, Mason’s cindery voice is her primary instrument. Armed with a slew of synths, strings, and analogue pedals, the two have been writing and producing music since 2010.

This heavy, expertly mastered 12″ vinyl includes two original Evy Jane tracks, as well as remixes from Taal Mala and Max Ulis, and is out on February 13th, 2012.

A digital version will follow in March, with additional remixes from Andy Dixon and Julien Mier. Purchase of the record includes a download to the digital release as well.

Silent Season's forthcoming release from Sonitus Eco is truly deep and relaxing dub-techno ambience. One for some serious chill-time.

Silent Season is a label I have been aware of for some time, and it would seem that their continuous dedication to high quality output has allowed them to continually sell-out of each release. I expect their next release to be no exception.

View the release and stream some of the tracks here on the Silent Season Bandcamp.

Well orchestrated and truly enveloping beautiful ambient works. Some with subtle rhythmic patterns, some just duly floating on their own momentum. This is most definitely meditative, relaxing, deep thought music. I find it especially great for working to, since it enhances my concentration, and allows me to really think clearly.

From the pre-release email:

“The end comes when we no longer talk with ourselves. It is the end of genuine thinking and the beginning of the final loneliness.” ~ Edward Gibbon

01 Ascention To Nowhere
02 Time Goes By..
03 Strange Figure Up Ahead
04 In the Cave
05 Living with people I create

Essáy, the German ambient-house wonderchild has released an EP on new label Glyph, and as expected it's all rather lovely.

Glyph is a new label set up by a couple of the fine chaps at Domino (although it’s not affiliated with Domino, I should note) to promote “new and exciting forms of electronic music and new producers”. Something that I’ve seen and heard before many times, but few labels have had me convinced from the word “go” like Glyph have.

Enlisting the incredibly talented Simon Schilling AKA Essáy for their first release, they’re setting a high standard from the offset. His track Morning Mountain, plus a radio edit, and another track Cold Mountain are on offer here, and as expected if you’re familiar with his work (which you should be) it’s all blissful, deep, ambient house stylings.

You may recognise the name and production values of Essáy from his Cut release, which was one of our first releases on the label.

So if the above video isn’t enough to tantalise you in to pursuing this release today (Bleep, iTunes), then maybe his free “Distance & Lights EP” from Cut will be! If it’s any help, the EP managed to get him listed in the top downloads of 2011 over on XLR8R (number 49!). No mean feat, I can assure you.

I should also say – I love Essáy’s own piece of art for the Morning Mountain track on Soundcloud:

Mysterious producer Akkord has surfaced out of the musical fray that is Manchester, and with him/her/them comes an exciting vinyl release in the form of Akkord.001

It’s long been known that the mystery of a producer or artist seems to be paramount and inversely proportional to their success. The discerning music listener likes to uncover things, and the challenge of the whodunnit-style musician hunt seems to fuel their sound, and contribute to their styling.

One such mysterious artist, producer (or indeed group of producers) to have surfaced recently is Akkord. With just a Facebook page, a Soundcloud and a Tumblr, Akkord’s presence is minimal. Just three tracks have surfaced thus far, and so far support has largely (almost suspiciously!) come from Synkro, Indigo and their cohorts in Manchester. Based on that fact alone, it’s almost certain that Akkord is set for a rather large 2012.

The recent appearance of an “Akkord.001″ announcement has caught my ear, and I expect will most certainly strike a chord with a number of others. Due soon on limited white 12″ vinyl, I presume this one will be the first big excitement of 2012, and no doubt pave the way for numerous other releases.

    Δkkord.001 by Δkkord

The mysterious Blind Mice gifted a world exclusive track for the latest Insight podcast. A fresh take on the juke/footwork 160-ish bpm stuff. Definitely worth checking out!

It’s not often I like to big up my own projects too much, but since I’ve been quiet of late, and since it’s a new year I wanted to highlight my beloved Insight podcast once more. The new episode (number 32 to be precise) is a wee bit special.

Aside from having the usual mix of new tracks to have landed in my inbox (as well as one or two others aswell) I’ve had a brand new producer send me a world-exclusive track which got me rather excited!

The producer (or indeed producers?) goes by the name of Blind Mice, and the track in question is the last one on the latest Insight. It’s a 160-ish flurry of vocals and melody which feels to me like a pretty fresh take on the footwork/juke style stuff that has been peppering the scene lately.

Apparently unavailable anywhere else, I suggest you check this one out. I’ve got Blind Mice tipped for big things over the next couple of years!

You can get the latest Insight (32) here.

Project Mooncircle and Finest Ego released their new free compilation on December 25th, so despite being slightly behind on posting this I can't recommend it enough. So much, for so little!

Project: Mooncircle and Finest Ego bring you the fifth edition of their acclaimed compilation series. Shifting focus towards central Europe, they find three countries; Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Sharing lots of their historical and cultural heritage, this copious collection contains work from producers of a wide range of musical manifestations – all located in the spectrum between traditional sample-based and organic sound to electronic and experimental compositions.

Grown up in the nineties with the organic sounds from across the big pond and a long tradition of electronic music in the German speaking world, this compilation showcases the fusion of electronic and classical soulful organic elements in the beat scene. The sound is as diverse as the country and its people, from Spaetzle to Klopse and from HipHop to Techno.

On this compilation you can find Boombap from the likes of Brenk & Suff Daddy but also electronic sounds from the likes of Robot Koch and Bit Tuner as well as atmospheric sonical waves from Glenn Astro and Anthony Drawn.

The influences vary from Jazz records, video games, Hip Hop, Drum ‘n’ Bass and Techno. But are there two different camps clashing here? Retro vs future, mountain village vs urban center, winter vs summer…

The compilation includes acts like Chief, Brenk, Dexter, Mono:Massive, Hulk Hodn, Captain Crook, Stroe, Hubert Daviz, Comfort Fit, Robot Koch, Jazzo & Melodiesinfonie, Quendolin Fender, Ju-Ar, Twit One, Suff Daddy, Figub Brazlevic, Szenario, Portformat, Flowtec, D-Fekt & Mr. Beef, Bit-Tuner, Feux, Kalifornia Kurt, B-Ju, Playpad Circus, Flex Fab, Ill-Luzion, Anthony Drawn, Hazeem, Minor Sick, XL The Red One, Glenn Astro, Frederic Robinson, and Willy Sunshine.

It’s not often i post about radio shows, but this one looks pretty special. I think you’ll agree. Here’s the low down from Wedge himself…

If Symptoms Persist and Wedge present what will probably be the last ever Wedge Show Christmas Special Extravaganza!!

For the past 4 years we have hosted a marathon 5 hour radio show from our house in Bristol where I live with dubstep stalwarts Appleblim, Arkist, and Gatekeeper. A MEGGA Christmas house party rave up featuring the biggest in Bristol Bass DJs smacking out pure dubplates on a fat rig while eating mince pies and getting merry on festive booze! All broadcast via webcam and internet streaming from the “Fortress of Bass” otherwise known as our gaff!

This will be the 5th and (most likely) the final year that we will be broadcasting this megabass showcase. 5 years seems like a good number to end on and good to finish on a high!

Previously the show has been broadcast on Subfm (big up whistler) but as I have since left the station the Xmas special 2011 will be broadcast from Ustream.tv complete with webcam and will also be recorded!

When: 20th December 2011 8:00pm gmt

Relevant and as up to date a documentary as I have seen for a while. I recommend you set aside 30 minutes and digest this.

The title of this documentary is “Pushing The Scene – Tensions and Emergence in an Accelerated Marketplace Culture” which is all fine and well – but it reads a little bit like a music lecture title, and ultimately it’s more than that. The video visits a few places and gets some fairly up to date opinions on where dubstep as a scene stands now, and where it might be going.

There are some nice pieces with a few heads, and some nicely thought out voice-over explanations, and ultimately I’d say it was insightful, although I think we’re all agreed that dubstep is changing, whether it’s for better or worse.

I’m slowly drifting from dubstep elsewhere, finding my own feet and exploring my own avenues, but for those who need a catalyst to delve in to more traditional dubstep, or who need a push to explore their own sub-culture, this is a great piece, and well worth a watch.

Check it on Vimeo here, if the above video fails.

I don't often post mixes here, so when I do, I feel it has to be worth taking the time to check it. This week's Percussion Lab is one such mix.

Granted, you won’t get a huge amount of musical satisfaction from oggling Nooka Jones’ impressively bushy ‘tache, or watching the inexplicably thin and wiry, yet undoubtedly talented DJG bop up and down behind the decks, but Percussion Lab Radio is more than that.

Well, arguably less actually. But in a good way. Aside from getting an oddly voyeuristic view in to the not-nearly-long-enough Monday evenings with Nooka, Praveen (Braille) and co., in Brooklyn; you get an admirable selection of tracks for a few hours which I quite enjoy having on while I work. Not, that this is background music by any means, but unless it’s live, it’s easy to set the video element aside while you listen, and just check in periodically like some sort of musical child monitor. Except they’re not children, they’re grown ups, and they’re not sleeping soundly, they’re sort of bobbing around in a room. What i’ve yet to work out though, is whether it’s a basement or room in someone’s apartment. Someone lucky enough to have more than a cupboard to live in in NYC, or whether it’s a mostly empty bar where it seems to be quite bright all the time.

Perhaps it’s the sense of mystery that keeps me hooked. I don’t know. What I do know, however is that this week, Dean (DJG) was in town, and joined Jones and Braille for what I’d describe as an incredible selection of house, deep techno, and bass music. Oh how I loathe these definitions, for we all know the score here. Just listen and find out. I for one, discovered a handful of tracks that I’ll be adding to my DJ box. Not only that but these nice little Monday sessions tend to brighten up my Tuesday at work, and get me just that little bit more excited about my impending move to NYC this coming year.

Stream the mix above, or check it on ustream here.

Jon from the LoDubs record label gives us an insight in to what he looks for when signing tracks, and listening to demo material.

It’s a little while since I wrote my Dub Etiquete article, and since it’s been read and re-read, I felt there was room for expansion in other areas of self-promotion for aspiring artists.

One of the key areas I think people are missing out on, is when they send music to record labels. now, it’s hard for me to speak from personal experience on this, because I’m not an artists with a particularly expansive catalogue, and it seems most of my label encounters have happened by sheer chance – which is in fact a part of the process worth bearing in mind. What I do believe though is that those people running labels can enlighten us on what they look for, and how they aquire new signings, because presumably the more you know about that, the more chance you can do things right for them, and ultimately find yourself signed up for a release.

First up, for Part 1 is Jon from LoDubs.

LoDubs have released work by Swarms, Clubroot, DJG, El Rakkas and more. They’re based out in Portland, from the Anthem Records store. Jon heads up the operation.

When it comes to looking for new music, I really just keep my ears open. If I can tell something is going to be interesting, I will sniff it out. A good example might be when I heard through a comment on Dubstepforum that Ebola was making 140 tempo back in 2008. I’ve listened to his breakcore stuff, but a year or so prior to that he had come in my record shop (Anthem Records in Portland) and just bought Italo Disco. I knew before I even heard it, based on all this, and how original his Breakcore is, that he would have the goods to deliver. If something strikes me at all, I will keep it around. I’ll usually listen to it once or twice, and then do something else for a day or two. If I can still remember the hook clearly, than it’s probably something to follow up on.

In terms of a “sound” for LoDubs, if something feels original then I’ll give it a closer look. It doesn’t really matter what style it is. I do try to release something roots-centric every 3 releases or so, as that is the core of all melodic bass music in my opinion.

When working with artists or producers, location is of very little importance. At first LoDubs was largely North and South America, but that was almost more out of happenstance than anything else. I really only consider whether or not the artist either tours a lot or will promote their release effectively. It’s great if they have a grounded idea of what releasing a record takes, and what comes out of it ultimately. Less and less people I talk to about records think I’m going to make them into the type of artist that only the brash-minded seem to like like these days. I think that is ultimately a fork in the road that we’ve already passed.

As far as our releases to-date and what attracted me to them initially, it’s pretty hard to say. I think, for me it’s all musically interesting in some way, which can, on occasion unfortunately, be a negative thing when it’s falling under the umbrella of “dance music” with regards to large scale success. Sometimes I feel like a record we are getting ready to release is what some might consider too advanced to do really well. However, ultimately if it’s the type of thing that I feel must be released, I will try to release it, maybe after something else that has had a bit of momentum, so hopefully that carries over a bit.

I think the the LoDubs ethos, and “sound” has become more pronounced over the years if anything. It is pretty distinct at this point that LoDubs on the full length side of things is the primary label releasing Deep Garage albums. I see Clubroot and Swarms as an advancement on the genre as a whole, towards sounds more akin with the emotional response many get from stuff that is more meditative, more cinematic, and just this greater range of colors and emotions in general. That stuff has allowed us to sidestep the conception many have of this music, which often doesn’t have much to do with mood, beauty, or bass anymore.”

Many thanks to Jon for taking the time out of a hectic schedule to write a bit for us. LoDubs have a varied set of releases forthcoming. The first of which is a remix 12″ from myself, DFRNT (Cat# LOSBUD-1211021) and the third full length from Clubroot, plus a really rootsy 12″ from Egoless of Croatia as well as a Mad Decent/LoDubs collaborative release, featuring the track Swarms just remixed for Diplo.

Sepalcure's self titled debut album has dropped, and I'm more than a little excited about it.

Every so often, you hear a track that makes you excited. You scramble for something to write with, or a way to make a note of the artist and track, and you track it down, listen to more and more and it becomes one of your “favorite tracks”. You suddenly find this loyalty to an artist you feel like you know, and your faith in the world of music is reinstated.

Often it happens when you least expect it, and you’re rarely prepared, but when it happens, it’s a truly beautiful thing. Not only that but you want to help preach the word to everyone about how good that particular artist or band is, and how you just discovered them, and how they’re going to be the next big thing and all that.

Often said artist or band will give you the chills for a bit, then it’ll die off and you’ll wonder what the fuss was all about. They’ll release more tracks and you’ll realise it wasn’t all that great in the first place and lose your love for what they were doing and forget about it while the next big thing comes along and farts them out of the way.

This decline has not happened with Sepalcure. Quite the opposite. Sepalcure caught my ear a while back, before their first EP surfaced. Not only that but I got all excited about their stuff, and I genuinely felt they were pushing a sound that was fresh and emotive and all the good things about music that I love. They pushed forward and released a second EP, and a remixes EP of the first, where I discovered that taken in a different direction, their music could provide continual fulfillment both on and off the dancefloor. I’ll never forget the first time I played the XI remix of their track “Love Pressure” to a crowd in San Francisco (my first time in California, no less) and thinking “Shit, this sounds even better than I imagined on a great system”.

So with their existing catalogue of EPs and their combined solo efforts (which, as an aside are truly wonderful in themselves) in mind, it really couldn’t have been better news to find out that an album was on the way. The thought of a full-length of their work that I could immerse myself in was awesome news, and so now that it’s finally dropped I can honestly say that it was worth the (at times excruciating) wait.

I for one, love the artwork. Sougwen’s work seems so fit for purpose here. For me, it sums up the music as well as compliments it. A perfect example of an album cover that works.

I’m not going to slur my way through an ever increasing list of adjectives for the music, or well-up at just how beautiful this all is, I’m just going to post the preview, some links and let you immerse yourself in the music. On the off-chance that you’ve not heard of these guys, or not been aware of their sounds, then I hope that you can get the same satisfaction from this, as I got when I first heard their work.

Krts, the Brooklyn dreamscape-beatsmith wonderkid and Pavel Dovgal a spangly-beat craftsman from the Ukraine have done a remix swap, and it's bloody good.

“Binary Compound” is a new digital EP series from Project: Mooncircle. The concept behind the series is to have two artists create remix-sketches of each others tracks, which will result in unheard blends of styles and genres and therefore the exploration of new musical ideas.

The first edition of this new series features Krts from Brooklyn and Pavel Dovgal from the Ukraine, who have crafted remixes of “Kiss Purple” and “Hold On”, respectively.

Tinker brings the sonic goodness with a new mix for Big Up Magazine. All wonky, squee, future bass and hip hop, this one is a sparkling aural delight.

A while ago I had the pleasure of both meeting Tinker and seeing her DJ. Twice in the same weekend no less! Her and her partner Kid Kameleon were on a short European tour which bizarrely involved Edinburgh.

Both her personality and her music were sparkling with excitement. Tinker’s style being one of varied sonic indulgence, her DJ sets were a mix of skwee, wonky, otherstep, future bass, broken beat and hip hop. Now I list those genres like I know what I’m talking about, but to be honest with you, I’m struggling with “otherstep”. I suspect it may be a “West coast thing“. Needless to say there was a huge variety of spangly beats and flexed, slung rhythms.

She tells Big Up:

I am an artist that is taking you on a sonic journey from start to finish, of new sounds, old sounds, textures, colors, and moods, and my purpose is rarely to play the song that you can sing along to.

And so with that, I present to you Tinker, with her mix for Big Up Podcast:

Indigo goes in to incredible depth on him and Synkro's forthcoming 11/11/11 night and his reasoning behind why they're hosting it. Essential and inspirational reading.

When people are passionate about something, you can tell. The words they use, and their expressions, their mannerisms and their behavior all points towards their passion. They speak (or type) with enthusiasm, and the abundant message becomes clear.

Hearing Synkro and Indigo talk about their forthcoming night “11/11/11″, both in person and via email has made it very clear that this is not just another clubnight. This is something so much deeper. Not deeper in the musical sense, but deeper in that it represents their passion.

A few years back both Synkro and Indigo were invited to do a show at a place called Rascals in Bangor. It was hosted by Locked Soundsystem, who subsequently kept up connections with the duo, and had them back to play a venue called Hendre Hall. On their return, they fell in love with the place and since then have been itching to put on an event there. There had been talks for some time, and Liam was keen to take advantage of the importance of the 11/11/11 date, so with a few phone calls the date and timing worked out perfectly.

The first Mindset event was scheduled, and one with an incredible, unique venue. Somewhere outwith the saturation and confines of the noisy city. Somewhere people could let loose. Only a couple of hours from Manchester, yet out in a beautiful part of Wales. Miles apart.

“Formerly a Victorian farmyard built in 1860 by the Lord Penryn of the Penryn estate, many of Hendre Hall’s features are still present today, however without the dedication and determination of Hendre Hall’s owners, the Innes Family, the exquisite stonework and workmanship would still be in a state of disrepair and serious neglect. The Innes family lovingly and sympathetically restored Hendre Hall to its former glory and it is now considered to be the finest and best preserved Victorian farm building in North Wales.”

Liam states:

We are taking a massive risk here, but that makes it far more worthwhile.”

He goes on to explain some motivation:

I have personally lost all faith in clubs and ‘clubbing’… The people it attracts (sometimes the lack of), the engineers that work there, the soundsystems, excessive alcohol, shit and fiendish drugs that have no effect on your consciousness and only on strengthening the ego. No soul, no love.”

Clearly, with the night, they’re hoping to push some of the love back in to the music. I for one, could not agree more. I asked Liam about his aims for the night, the possible point he’s trying to make, if any:

Everyone is welcome to take their own meaning, point or statement from the night but from our perspective it’s a celebration of life and purpose.”

This becomes abundantly clear as he continues:

Nothing is random. Order IS. The world and our lives are full of signs and symbols. These signs and symbols have followed myself and many people around for a very long time. Seeing these repeatedly to the point where I began to seek understanding and wonder about the meaning of it, led me to consider the reality of my true nature and discuss these things with other people: we are spirit having a human experience, and to consciously participate in our own and others evolution. We are a lot more powerful than we are led to believe.

We are energy. Numbers and sequences of numbers have an energetic quality and essence, like music or sounds – all of which are vibration; which when organized and coherent are beautiful and transmit meaning through experience and through content / information. This information comes directly through the “melody” of such “music” and also our cells receive overtones we cannot even comprehend with our physical senses. We internalise the intelligence and structure of this energetic transmission holographically.

1 is a magical number: A number of wholeness, unity, and new beginnings. 1 tends to primarily be associated with pure, positive energy… Consider what 111111 means in terms of the amplification of this energy. These energetic structures communicate directly to our DNA. We have been manipulated for a very long time, through TV, Films, food and a mass of other means to dumb us down, so we don’t question. This is to keep the structures in place, without us knowing. I can prove to you now that this is in place. There is a fear-mongering film “11-11-11″ which is out on the same date to throw off and distract as many people as possible. Trying to flood fear, hatred and negativity through our minds at a very significant and powerful time.

I would love to head towards expanded consciousness and the creation of a civilization based on unity and love, 11/11/11 cannot help but create within us an anticipation of an enormously powerful point at which our cultural and energetic templates may jump to new, more expansive and love filled versions… Literal tipping points in reality. Things are changing dramatically, you can see it for yourself all around us. People are waking up, as it has been anticipated for thousands of years, at this exact time.

Each time you, or any other consciously raises their awareness to a more loving, accepting, grateful frequency you transform an aspect that is causing the global pain. When more awaken to vibrate a pure clear frequency of love, joy and appreciation there is transformation in the dense vibrations of hatred, fear and judgment. There will be a shift in the global and universal pain.

We are creating a new beginning right here, together. Awareness is collective; we all draw from a common unified field. The direction of life is flowing from duality toward Unity and Wholeness. The key is to be aware what direction you’re looking in, what you are thinking about and thereby creating.

At this intersection of the known and the unknown, is the essence of every NOW. As you evolve so does the Universe evolve. As we identify more and more with our collective awareness we move increasingly into freedom. Love. The more you act knowing your influence, your “song” is heard everywhere and affects everything, the more alignment, inspiration and ease you experience. Ironic but true. Your own vibration, the geometry and sensibility of your “song” and how you choose to focus it have more impact on this day than you may realise. Claim what is yours to create and be unique.

To welcome the energy to transform in this powerful time is what is important. Begin by loving and honoring yourself. Then love and honor others. Something amazing is taking place that we are an important part of. I think we are in a time where we will discover something beautiful about ourselves, which has been hidden. All of this could be the start of something entirely new. Bringing a mass of people with this in mind could create something that is extremely effective in this time. To feel whole and connected with the people 11/11/11 attracts is what we would like to achieve.”

So there you have it. I suggest you give that another read and really digest the words and meaning. It may seem like a lot to take in, but there’s truth and passion in what Liam explains.

It’s something that fills me with excitement and really, something i’d like to see more people talking about.

Reeling this in for a minute to the night specifically, I wondered if there were plans or discussions to follow up the event, after all – if it’s a success, then why not continue to promote this culture?

Liam says:

New Year’s Eve might be on the cards depending on how this one goes. I would like to bring people together as often as possible.”

Bringing people together is a major part of the night, and evidence of that alone is seen with the lineup. Everyone involved being connected in some way. Whether it’s Synkro, Stray, Mode, Consequence (who’s celebrating his album launch at the night) and Indigo all releasing on Dbridge’s Exit label, or AnD, Versa, Troy Gunner, Eleven8 and Until Silence all having releases on Mindset.

Liam explains:

Illum Sphere (+the special guests) & PYC collective are long time friends and some of the most down to earth, passionate and honest people I know.”

It’s clear that a great deal of love has gone in to putting this night on, and making sure that it’s something worth remembering. For me, it’s exciting just writing about the possibilities it could open up.

Here is all the information on the night. If there’s one night i recommend you go to this year, this would be it.

Find out how chord sequences are worked out, and what those oft-referenced strings of numbers all mean. Karen Cuneo Ramirez explains how chords work.

With a small amount of music theory under my belt, having taken piano and wind instrument lessons through primary and secondary school, I’m familiar with a few chords and tend not to struggle too much when putting things together, however I’m keen to push my knowledge of chords, so that I can put together more complex structures.

Cue the internet, and it’s vast sprawling wealth of information.

I stumbled upon these two tutorials that had been caught on camera while searching that string of numbers in the title. 1 6 2 5 1. It had been mentioned in something else i was watching, and I wanted more information on how it worked.

This, my friends will enlighten you somewhat. If you have a little knowledge about the scales and keys on a piano – this will be a doddle. If you have no experience whatsoever, then you might want to look up some very basic theory.

Either way – Karen Cuneo Ramirez goes some way to explaining how and why chords are numbered like this, and shows some pretty crutial information for stringing chords together and getting them to work.

Yes, it’s a basic tutorial of sorts – so anyone who’s a whiz at the piano will probably know this stuff, but hey – I found it a great short watch. Now I’m off to play with chords.

The Massive synth is a powerhouse, so spend a couple of hours learning about it with these expert video tutorials from massivesynth.com

Massive is pretty much one of the main go-to synths for me when I’m working on a track. I love the versatility, the way of working, and I’m used to working with it now, so it feels familiar.

I’d recommend everyone get to grips with it, since it’s a powerful piece of software. Yes – it has some presets which are often over-used, but considering the ability to put together your own sounds so quickly, it’s easy to forget that the “brutal electro” setting even exists.

So with that in mind, I’d like to present “NI Massive Complete” – a comprehensive two and a half hour video tutorial (split in to sections, don’t worry) that covers everything you could possibly want to know about massive, from the basics, through routing, sound shaping, sequencing, effects to bringin it all together.

It’s not something that I’ve seen in this format before, and it’s certainly got the potential to give you a good solid grounding in the synth, as well as give you a great basis to use other synths from too.

The videos are in HD, and are also mobile friendly if you’re on the move and the whole thing is a very affordable $37 – considerably less than you’d pay for two hours of an expert’s time to take you through the synth.
