Yong is the first producer to feature twice here on Sittingovation, and with his second appearance comes his new EP “Riddim Full of Culture” on his own label. You can get it at the link above, and stream the tracks from his MySpace.

“Soundboy” is a cheery, dub-tinged almost reggae exploration, with this rather pleasant little ditty running over the top. There’s a hint of crunk or hyphy about the drumloop, and plenty going on synth-side.

“Riddim Full of Culture” – the title track on the EP starts with a bizarre down-pitched vocal sample and this almost old-skool hip hop drumloop and is that an 808 hit? a sparkly synth holds the first breakdown together, and then plays out through the track. On the whole – this reeks of Jamaica and roots stuff. If you like that stuff it’s fine and dandy – although not entirely my pot of noodle.

“Burnin feat. Jaybird” – a vocal heavy track here, with great production, a big solid sub and all the synths in the right places. Definately one to skank along to. I’d say the strongest track on the EP.

If there’s one thing I’m getting from all three tracks on this release it’s the reggae, dub, roots influence on Yong’s prduction. If you’re in to the red, yellow & green thing – then this will be properly up your street. If you prefer your darker heavier more filthy, or perhaps dubbed-out space-age dubstep – then perhaps you can make your own mind up about this.
