King SlaFF – Testament

Fire over to King SlaFF’s MySpace and cop a listen to ‘testament’ on the player.
It’s a simple construct, and the bassdrum may not knock your socks clean-off, but there’s something very attractive about this track. It has that regular irregularity, that organised disorganisation, a feeling of diversity, while retaining a very singular theme.
it’s a strange pseudo 4-4 beat, with an end of bar break, leaving you wondering whether this is a down-sized techno track, or an uptempo dubstep track. It’s got an almost broken beat drum, while a very simple (not quite as bright as I’d like) hi-hat keeping the half tempo going. While a couple of chords sing to each other across some sort of acoustic abyss. Throw in some off-beat percussion hits, and some supporting plinks on a synth and you have this enthralling track.
I keep thinking if Pink Floyd had started exploring dubtep and techno as a theme, they might have started an album with something like this. The track feel quite modest to an extent. It’s almost like you could drift on by without noticing it and it wouldn’t feel any different. A nice quality to have. It’s always fresh to meet a track that sounds so nice, but doesn’t jostle for your attention, so you can really take a second out to let it speak to you. Am I getting too conceptual?
Let’s just say that I like it. It’s baffling me, while at the same time being incredible straight forward.
SlaFF seems to be a currently unsigned Nottingham based producer. I don’t know about you, but I’ll be keeping a close eye on his sound, as I’m thinking it’ll be developing rather rapidly in the near future.
