Foiled Torsos – Urban Decay / Vital

“Urban Decay” begins with the sound of some post-apocalyptic landscape. There’s this very evident noise-loop which just puts the whole track in some state of… well… decay I suppose. I say that like it’s a bad thing – but I feel like without it, and some of the other ambience built up in the mix – It wouldn’t be quite the same track.
The basis of the loop is a semi-subtle sub, and a minimal percussion/drum-loop that carries some rather eerie synths through the track. There’s something of a lack of breakdowns, or variation – but I get the feeling this one’s all about building up that almost hypnotic loop and getting entirely lost when the breakdown finally dissipates and leaves you with nothing but that noise. After that there’s nothing left to do but fire that monotonous loop back on and nod your head to the sounds of a crumbling environment.
“Vital” is our second subject for today. A rather more self-aware effort, with some great warm metallic pads over a tentative loop with the odd blip or two to make sure you’re still listening. After a synth build-up (and some nice ones at that) There’s that late breakdown, and the second installment. The track still retains the hypnotic quality that “Urban Decay” had, but it’s very much more subtle, so you barely even realise what’s happening. You may experience one of those great “Hold on… have I been listening to this for half an hour?” moments!
I urge you to check out the other tracks in the player over at Foiled Torsos, and just let the music slowly work its way in to your brain! Action and Infident are astounding!
