2562 – Unbalance (Forthcoming)

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Dave Huismans is set to release his sophomore 2562 album later this year.

The Dutch producer’s Aerial album of last year managed to excite both techno and dubstep fans with its synergy of rolling rhythms and sublow frequencies, becoming a touchstone for DJs who were attempting to blur the boundaries between the two genres. While a fully realised micro-scene never seemed to materialise, Huismans has continued to mine this particular sound, although with more of a focus on his A Made Up Sound moniker, which was created to showcase a broken house and techno vibe.

His latest 2562 full-length is titled Unbalance, and although we’re still to hear any of the tracks on the record apart from the wonky halfstep of “Love In Outer Space” (which featured on this year’s Tectonic Plates Vol 2 compilation), we’re assured by Tectonic boss Pinch that his second album will eclipse the template set out on Aerial. “I’ve worked closely with 2562 over the last few years,” he states, “and I can honestly say that Unbalance is an incredible album – it’s one of the most exciting releases that Tectonic has seen to date – it vastly exceeds the already high standard he set himself with Aerial.” (RA)

Skyence – Hatred / Concrete [FREE EP]

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

It’s been a wee while since I last posted, so here’s something I’ve been meaning to mention for a week or two now.

Skyence – the producer behind a great debut EP on Dubkraft, has just released 2 free tracks which go a little way towards a heavier and more diverse sound.

You can get the tracks and artwork here.

Wixel – An Empty Canvas EP [FREE download]

Monday, July 13th, 2009

I’ve been spellbound this evening, by a producer who calls himself Wixel.

If you can imagine for a moment, that you’re deep in meditation. If you don’t meditate – try to imagine what it might be like. Everything is still, there’s almost silence, and a real sense of calmness.

Then slowly from out of the atmosphere – so slowly you barely notice it until it’s upon you – rises a layered chorus of filtered sound. A soft, intrigue-filled noise – with small snippets of places and feelings that drift in and out.

This is what Wixel’s “An Empty Canvas” EP sounds like. In his words “i cant say what i would compare it too, just tried to follow my own thing – even though i must admit i am heavily influenced by that burial (thread). ive been sampling youtube + beats off the grid all the time. feel free to grab it or whatever. check track 6 if you only check one track.”

Autopilot – Step Down EP [FREE]

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Since Autopilot’s going to be one of the talented producers I’m selecting for the forthcoming Echodub Loves compilation, I felt it would be a good idea to mention his fresh new free EP!

Step Down is a collection of 8 tracks, which I’d describe as deep and synthy with clear influence from IDM a sprinkling of glitch and some excellent compressed crunchiness.

New HENCH material from Giant – bit of a rave anyone?

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Do you ever have those “I could go a bit of a rave” moments?

I know I do. I can pledge alliance to the deep and moody stuff all day, but sometimes there’s a need for the occasional skank to a balls-out banger.

Back when I was well in to my hip hop – It would be a bit of Just Blaze, or some heavy Primo joints. When I was in to my electro, it would be D.I.M. or some other gritty electro filth If it was Drum & Bass, a bit of Limewax or Tech Itch. But now that I’m immersed in dubstep these days, it’s fallen upon a new group of musicians to be hailed the banger kings – and what better label to take that on, than Hench.

Giant are a Russian group of producers who are debuting on Hench for the label’s 10th EP. And instead of bigging this up with long words, and confusing adjectives – I’ll just let you have a listen to the tracks. I’m sure those of you with an affection for the heavy stuff will delight in picking these up when they surface in August.

Now, personally I prefer Swoosh, just as it’s that teency bit deeper, but that’s just me – I’m not here to change minds.

Enjoy!

The consistently excellent Absense has unveiled a new track from his secret workshop and I’m delighted to be able to present to you “Haze”.

It’s perfect really. I have real difficulty putting my appreciation for Absense’s work in to words – suffice to say I’m desperate to hear more from him in the future!
