MySpace love – http://www.myspace.com/thephatconductor
WWW love – http://www.thephatconductor.com

You know when you discover a great track, or album and you think to yourself “I wonder why I hadn’t noticed these guys before”? Well that’s what I’m getting from ill.gates’ incredibly well produced album “Autopirate”

It’s hard to pinpoint a genre for this full-length from Toronto’s madcap producer (also known as The Phat Conductor), but it most definately crosses lines between dubstep, breaks, electro and hip hop. Normally I’d shy away from a genre list like that – but I urge you to give this a chance. From the word go I was converted.

Thesis – Shadowloops & Hardstep

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

I was kindly send some dubs by a Holland based producer Theo Howard AKA “Thesis” today.

You can check his MySpace out here , where both tracks reviewed are available to listen to.

Thesis – Shadowloops

A filtered synth intro, with accompanying ethnic percussion, and slowly approaching bass give us the intro to this spaced out roller. Throughout which the bass hypnotically comes and goes at the low end, while bongos take charge up top. There’s some simple echoing melodies at points, although it would seem the focus here is very much on the percussion, which sounds as if it has been carefully structured over the whole track.

Thesis – Hardstep

Contrary to it’s name, this isn’t what I’d call hard-step. It doesn’t rip through the low end like a buzz-saw, it doesn’t throw you off your seat with massive beats and breaks – but it does sooth, relax and very much flow throughout.

The track has some incredible filtered breaks which take the track from start to finish flawlessly. There are vocal samples and some well placed synths for interest, as well as a solid sub down the low end keeping things going. The focus here is again on the percussion, but more of the break, and drumloop then the bongos (which are indeed still apparent). The chanting/singing throughout gives this an almost eastern feel – but definately more progressive samba-step than hard-step. Perhaps an oversight on the name, but those who give this a chance will definately be pleased with the results.

No news on release information, but any news will likely surface on the MySpace.

Jakes – Part of Me

Check out “Part of Me” – the sample in the MySpace player.

I’ve just fallen in love with this track. The reversed synths, the cheeky synth stabs on the loop, and the whole feel of the sounds involved. It’s lush, dubby and still a proper rolling track. Amazing stuff. I don’t have much more to say about this. No release info, no further track info from the producer yet – but I’ll get on it, and see what I can dig up for you!

Nu-Urban Music – Dubstep business on the way

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Nu Urban Music – the phrase on its own could be a nod to the cliched RnB scene with its bling, its rappers, soul-vocalists and its altogether rather crummy existence. (I’m not a big RnB fan) However; take ‘Nu Urban Music’ and place it in the right context, and you have the Drum & Bass behemoth distributer, store and general audio extravagansa who have just decided to expand their weighty wings to covet some serious dubstep.

I say serious, I mean basically deadly. You might already be familiar with one of the latest Caspa remixes (of TC’s Where’s My Money) and if not – let’s just say there’s some heavy-duty releases coming from Nu-Urban very soon.

Allow me to elaborate… (brace yourself this is a monster post!!)

DFRNT – The DFRNT Engine EP

Friday, September 5th, 2008

I’m not going to make a big thing of this, because I have done elsewhere – so I’ll just gently nudge you in the direction of the promo site – and hope that you’ve got the sense to do yourself a favour and take a listen!!

Tha Doc – Champion Dub / From Home

Friday, September 5th, 2008

http://www.myspace.com/thadiggydiggydoc

The Doc seems to have it more or less nailed down. A solid catalogue of great tracks that span enough of a range to give you the confidence that he can produce the goods when required. Presented with such a vareity, I’ve chosen to highlight Champion Dub and From Home.

“Champion Dub” is a fairly dubbed-out minimal track, but instead of the long etheral pads that some opt for, Tha Doc has favoured a rather more varied selection of random blips, noises and pads to accompany his perhaps a little agressive vocal sample.

James Blake – Optimism

“Optimism”

I’ve yet to hear a track like this one. There’s something quite beautiful about the piano lines within, and that major-to-minor chord melody gives this quite a different feel to your normal dubstep affair.

I’m used to those dark whirling rhythms, with very sinister things going on in the background. The genre gets very much switched up here for something that reminds me more of modern RnB than it does of Dubstep. Normally I’d dake that as a sign to switch off, but in this instance it’s very much a call to switch on.

Ido Flax – Deeper / Out of Blank / Vortex

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

If you can find anything on the internet about Ido Flax other than a Facebook private profile and this rather suspect looking page – then please post it in the comments, as I’m lost for MySpace profiles, Virp players or sites. Not even a post on a forum.

How Mr Flax promotes his tunes is beyond me, but I expect if he was to consider putting some out there, he might get some favourable results. (I got them via email)

EDIT: – we have a MySpace page from the man Flax himself! Tune in and read on!!

Esh – Red Trolley (forthcoming – Rogue Dubs)

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Fire yourself on over to http://www.myspace.com/eshone and check out “Red Trolley”. Produced by San Diego based ‘Esh’ and forthcoming on FSTZ’s label Rogue Dubs.

Beautiful organ loops, a light pitter patter of percussion, and a slow mid bass that occasionally rips through the track. Red Trolley is a gorgeous piece of work. I think most of the tracks beauty can be attributed to that lush organ sample running throughout. The organs very much lead the melody and drag the other instruments through the mix. It’s a fairly simple formula by defenition, but it’s been well executed, and although the track could be EQd slightly to make it really sing, I’d say get right on this, as when it’s released it’s going to be well worth passing with a few bucks for.

Liquidrockz – Angel, Clonez & Psiren

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

I’ve just found myself in the middle of a Japanese forest, surrounded by a group of people. They all have individual instruments, some of which I’ve never seen before. There’s some flutes, violins a vocalist and then some sort of hybrid bass-tube instrument amongst others.

The group are plaing me this haunting melody, with a very ‘live’ feel about it. Nothing is over-processed here by the sounds of things. They seem content to play to me, slowly building up their sounds until after a couple of minutes, they break in to this frantic beat-driven bass-heavy breaks/dubstep hybrid sound. It suddenly becomes apparent that there are twice as many people here as I thought initially, and stretching off back in to the forest are people with snares, bits of percussion, and a bunch of processors for the bass.

It’s a bizarre picture to conjour up, but it seems apt, and somewhat fitting for this track “Angel” from German producer outfit Liquidrockz.
