2562 – Unbalance (Forthcoming)

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Dave Huismans is set to release his sophomore 2562 album later this year.

The Dutch producer’s Aerial album of last year managed to excite both techno and dubstep fans with its synergy of rolling rhythms and sublow frequencies, becoming a touchstone for DJs who were attempting to blur the boundaries between the two genres. While a fully realised micro-scene never seemed to materialise, Huismans has continued to mine this particular sound, although with more of a focus on his A Made Up Sound moniker, which was created to showcase a broken house and techno vibe.

His latest 2562 full-length is titled Unbalance, and although we’re still to hear any of the tracks on the record apart from the wonky halfstep of “Love In Outer Space” (which featured on this year’s Tectonic Plates Vol 2 compilation), we’re assured by Tectonic boss Pinch that his second album will eclipse the template set out on Aerial. “I’ve worked closely with 2562 over the last few years,” he states, “and I can honestly say that Unbalance is an incredible album – it’s one of the most exciting releases that Tectonic has seen to date – it vastly exceeds the already high standard he set himself with Aerial.” (RA)

Skyence – Hatred / Concrete [FREE EP]

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

It’s been a wee while since I last posted, so here’s something I’ve been meaning to mention for a week or two now.

Skyence – the producer behind a great debut EP on Dubkraft, has just released 2 free tracks which go a little way towards a heavier and more diverse sound.

You can get the tracks and artwork here.

Autopilot – Step Down EP [FREE]

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Since Autopilot’s going to be one of the talented producers I’m selecting for the forthcoming Echodub Loves compilation, I felt it would be a good idea to mention his fresh new free EP!

Step Down is a collection of 8 tracks, which I’d describe as deep and synthy with clear influence from IDM a sprinkling of glitch and some excellent compressed crunchiness.

Absense – Haze

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

The consistently excellent Absense has unveiled a new track from his secret workshop and I’m delighted to be able to present to you “Haze”.

You can hear the track on Absense’s MySpace here.

It’s perfect really. I have real difficulty putting my appreciation for Absense’s work in to words – suffice to say I’m desperate to hear more from him in the future!

DJ Madd – New Beats and a free track!

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Having been furiously producing for the past few months, following his incredible “Numbers” release on Jamie Vista’s “Boom Bap Records” – DJ madd returns to us with a bit of an update.

There are a handful of new tracks on his MySpace – including my personal favourite “Why” due on Tube10 soon.

And as well as this, he’s provided us with a free 320. You can’t say fairer than that!

Download DJ Madd – “Tonight” here.

In his own words Tonight is “a smoother garagey vibe track for your listening pleasure“.

My money’s on this Hungarian newcomer! (Not to mention the fact that he’s going to be remixing one of the tracks from the forthcoming DFRNT – “Metafiction” album)

James Blake – Air and Lack Thereof / Sparing The Horses [Hemlock]

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

I recall a good few months ago when an eager James Blake sent me a couple of tracks through dubstepforum for a listen. Both were beautiful chilled pieces of piano work with some finely tuned sub beneath, and Blake’s talent was instantly recogniseable. It would seem now that he’s very capable of producing a vareity of sounds, from that stripped back piano work, through fuller sounding wonky to the reaches of some excellent vocal pieces. Hemlock have first dibs on his stuff this time however!

The London based label’s new release now finds James pushing out one of the first tracks he created (although not one he had sent me previously). In his own words “Air and Lack Thereof is actually the first tune I ever wrote, and it took me a year to work out how I wanted to approach it, but I think the waiting paid off. ” I’ll say. You’ll most likely recognise the track since it’s been getting some heavy support from plenty DJs, both radio and live. I’ve got very little to say about it short of this: You cannot afford to miss this when it’s released.

On the flipside to JB’s curiously named pseudo-wonky dubstep affair you’ll find ‘Sparing The Horses’ which, considering how quickly it was written, is a track with some serious growing ability. Again, James comments “I finished [Sparing The Horses] in about a week. I knew how I wanted to approach it, but I wanted to push the sound into new territories.” And i’d say he’s done just that.

So it would seem that James is doing rather well. An ace release on Hemlock, following an excellent mix on the truly excellent “Electronic Explorations” podcast last week, and I’m almost certain we’ll be seeing and hearing more from this meistro before the year is over.

Egoless – No Ego, No Problems EP – FREE

Friday, May 1st, 2009

It all started with “Ja” after hearing it on Myrkur’s Radikal Radio on Sub FM. I was hooked by the depth, and sheer production value in a track which took dubstep, and mixed with a real middle-eastern vibe. Not in the blatant, dancefloor-filling sens of Chase and Status, but in a way that was far more profound, and encompassing.

And so, I’m delighted to be able to promote the No Ego, No Problems EP – where you can get this and 5 other sublime tracks for free. Yep… sheer quality, for nothing.

Croatia’s Egoless has me hooked. A producer who has taken real time and precision to perfect an EP of tracks which take influence from a variety of places, styles and dare I say it feelings.

In his own words “I have some special feelings about the songs in this release, I don’t want to sell this, and make it a “product”. That’s the reason i refused some of the labels that wanted to release this and decided to put this for free. You may disrespect and ignore it automatically because it’s free, but the positive feelings that aroused my soul while making these tunes will never fade away…”

I shouldn’t need to say anything else.

Desto – Bounce / Past / Nightwalker [BOOM02]

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

It’s still very rare for me to get through a DJ set these days without including BoomBap Record’s first release from DJ Madd – “Numbers” – and so it was going to be very unlikely that Vista’s label and their second release would pass me by particularly quickly in the future.

That future has come around, and we’re presented with brand new deepness from Finland’s very own Desto. Hot on the heels of his Big Up magazine promo mix (mp3), he’s put out a 3-track vinyl on BoomBap, and what a cracker it is.

Bounce, Past and Nightwalker all ooze with the sexiness of Madd’s “Numbers” but add further depth and importance to the label.

Well produced, intelligent dubstep, with echoes of ambience, elements of bass, and some beautiful space within the mix. Not to mention the layers of percussion that all three tracks seem to effortlessly contain.

My own highlight is the “Nightwalker” track for it’s sheer depth and ambience – although for DJing, I’d tend towards the A-side Bounce which is more likely to hold the crowd.

You can buy Desto’s release here from Chemical.
