Burial / Four Tet – Moth [you know... the mysterious one...]

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

So it’s shrouded in mystery and lacks artwork as well as track notes (thus far). Burial joins bizarre twee-audio-tinkerer FourTet for an interesting meeting of techniques and music.

Track 1 – which sounds like “the Burial track” to me (although they most likely both worked on both) and sits drenched in the usual Burial schmooze of dusty beats, woodblock cracks, and almost indistinguishable melody which all seems to add up to something people jump on at the first chance. My immediate reaction is that it’s not as memorable as some of his other work. Mainly because it sounds like Four Tet’s messed about with it and given it a bizarre ‘happy smiley’ sheen which completely removes part of what Burial was all about for me. Where’s the moody desolate “walking home from a club at 5am” type feeling?

Track 2 – which by elimination I’m assuming is “the FourTet one” gets a bit housey. For those who can’t get audio, it sounds a bit like your next door neighbor, playing that horrendous 2004 version of Lou Reed’s Satellite of Love at high volume with the treble turned down.

it’s not terrible. There are blissed-out elements that shine through – but it’s not the greatest thing I’ve seen over-hyped, and after catching Mr Hebden’s musical-nonsense-mongery live at Connect Festival 2007 when he decided it would be a good idea to team up with jazz drummer Steve Reid and bash out some free form noise, I’m hardly surprised that his half of the release isn’t grabbing me by the man-breasts and wrenching me forward to scream audio loveliness in my face like some flower-adorned hippy drill-master.

If you’re lucky enough to have pre-orded the vinyl, then come the 4th of May I expect it won’t matter what I think, as you’ll be a mega-fan of either artist if not both, but if you’re waiting for a re-pressing or eagerly awaiting a dodgy low-fi copy from your mate, or a rip from the radio – don’t get too worked up, I’d imagine once you hear the tracks in their entirety you’ll realise it’s quite a lot of fuss about not very much.

Desto – Bounce / Past / Nightwalker [BOOM02]

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

It’s still very rare for me to get through a DJ set these days without including BoomBap Record’s first release from DJ Madd – “Numbers” – and so it was going to be very unlikely that Vista’s label and their second release would pass me by particularly quickly in the future.

That future has come around, and we’re presented with brand new deepness from Finland’s very own Desto. Hot on the heels of his Big Up magazine promo mix (mp3), he’s put out a 3-track vinyl on BoomBap, and what a cracker it is.

Bounce, Past and Nightwalker all ooze with the sexiness of Madd’s “Numbers” but add further depth and importance to the label.

Well produced, intelligent dubstep, with echoes of ambience, elements of bass, and some beautiful space within the mix. Not to mention the layers of percussion that all three tracks seem to effortlessly contain.

My own highlight is the “Nightwalker” track for it’s sheer depth and ambience – although for DJing, I’d tend towards the A-side Bounce which is more likely to hold the crowd.

You can buy Desto’s release here from Chemical.

Asusu – undiscovered deepness…

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

I’ve just been forwarded to Asusu, by a fellow producer and I have to say I’m mightily impressed.

I dread to mention Burial here, as it would seem people are getting sick of his oversaturated apparent influence (which I’ve yet to see proven) but let’s say Burial hooked up with Synkro, Indigo, Martyn and hell… TRG (just for the hell of it) – then the result would come out a little like Asusu.

His work reminds me of all of the above artists, and more – echoes of Boards of Canada, and Aphex Twin are apparent, and the more recent VVV shares a similar style.

So instead of rambling about how good it is any longer, I’ll just gently nudge you in the general direction of a top-notch EP on Junodownload, and indeed his MySpace page.

Enjoy!

Upwellings – Dubism EP [ZeECc Records ECc003]

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Swirling dub-techno and finely-tuned beats are what makes the new Dubism EP from Upwellings so atention-grabbingly beautiful.

Following on from DJ Axs’s Moment to Dub EP on ZeECc, the Dubism EP continues with what you might expect from the French label.

Well crafted, deep and altogether rather lovely dub-techno which is most definately worth your cash. If you’re a fan of the likes of Quantec, Leo Cavallo, or perhaps more ambient stuff like Echospace/Deepchord or bvdub – then I expect there’ll be plenty on offer here for you to enjoy.

Upwellings seems to be gathering a decent momentum too, with releases on deepindub.org, Schall-Netlabel and Klique already.

You can preview the tracks, and purchase them for an altogether rather reasonable sum here.

Deep, Liquid & Soulful Dubstep Producers and Labels – Where to start…

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Since this seems to be quite a common request from a number of newcomers to the scene, I felt the necessity to post something that they could be pointed in the direction of, to save people answering the same question over and over.

Here are – in my opinion – some of the better producers making deeper, garage-influenced, liquid and more soulful dubstep. If you feel i’ve made any mistakes, or not included “absolutely crucial” producers – just comment, and I’ll amend wherever possible.

A DFRNT type of update…

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

One on a more personal level in fact.

I’ve got a few things to mention…

Firstly, you can download the promo mix of my forthcoming album “Metafiction” from the release page on the DFRNT site. Basically a taster of all the tracks from the album, in order – so you can start saving for the CD right away. (or not, depending on how you feel about it I suppose!)

Secondly, you can download my new April mix from the mixes page on the DFRNT site. There’s a tracklisting so you don’t get lost.

Thirdly, I’ve completed my remix of “Valley of the Shadows” by Origin Unknown, which you can download from the tracks page on the DFRNT site. If you’re not familiar with the original, I suggest you educate yourself here.

I feel guilty posting about myself, but heck… It’s my ruddy blog OK!?

Leo Cavallo – Magma 09 [EXCLUSIVE FREE DOWNLOAD]

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

So after Rhythmicon’s excellent “Solstice Dub” last week, I’d like to bring you a dub-techno download you’ll not find anywhere else!

Leo Cavallo – Magma 09

Stream a 128k preview…

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Download the track here (right click & save target as)

I don’t want to give too much away, but Leo’s “Magma 09″ is a beautiful progressive masterpiece which builds, swells and shimmers from nothing in to something brilliantly driving where subtle melodies slide in and out of the track and the whole track really takes you on a journey.

You can find out more about Leo from a previous post where I highlighted his work, and you can also get yourself some of his kickdrums for free here.

Leo Cavallo – Free Drum Sample pack

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Just before I post an exclusive track from Leo, I’d like to highlight his drum pack which you can download for free

In his own words…

“Not very much to say. They’re just kick drums! It’s a pack of about 50 kick drums. There are a few “pure” samples from drum-machines/modules (also a real 909 kick in there) but most of them are layered/filtered/processed synthesized sounds, created with an Elektron Machinedrum, Clavia Nord Modular, Clavia G2, Access Virus C and Sound Forge.”

So if you’re looking for some deep dubby bassdrums – at least check em out…
