Leo Cavallo

Monday, January 12th, 2009

I’ve just been introduced to Leo Cavallo an Intalian producer, currently living in Barcelona. His main job is as a sound-designer/editor for Sony Pictures/Creative Software, but as if that wasn’t enough Leo turns his hand very well to the sounds of dub-tech.

His tracks are clean and crisp, while retaining the warmth of the filtered noise and muted bassdrums that dub-techno so heartily embraces. There’s more of a driving urgency throughout his tracks, as opposed to the more relaxed nature of say, Dave Wesley. And as opposed to obvious changes in tempo or sound, there’s some great subtle percussion and sounds going on throughout many of his tracks.

I’m actually really glad that this whole new world of dub-techno has been opened up to me, and I’m loving every minute of it. Finding new tracks, artists and diverging from the big-names, to places I never thought I’d hear.

Leo can be found on Bandcamp. I urge you to make some purchases!

Quantec – Life has Changed

Just a quick update from work – but I couldn’t help but notice Quantec has updated his MySpace Profile with another incredible tune “Life Has Changed”.

Very nice indeed…

Dave Wesley & Arctic Dub Records

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

I was recently notified about David Wesley’s productions, following my new direction with the blog, and was pleasantly surprised to find some excellent work on his website.

Not only was there a number of tracks to stream, but there was also the option to download some tracks (albeit 128k through bandcamp, but the option for higher qualities and different formats was there if you wanted to part with a wee bit of cash.

His stuff seems to sit very firmly in the dub-techno genre, but have less of the constant hypnotic beat of the likes of Quantec or the Modern Love lot, and don’t seem to be as washy and beatless as Severence, they have similar elements to both sides of the sound, but feel slightly more leftfield. There’s more of a slow, stepping beat on a number of his productions, and there’s often a few more interesting sounds and samples introduced which takes away slightly from the ambience element, and keeps the sound interesting.

Check his stuff out – My favourites from the page are “Circuits of Iapetus” and “Hyperdimensional Hexagon” from the Inverted Pyramids EP.

Severence

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

I don’t know much about Severence. I know he’s from Spain (Murcia according to his MySpace page)

There’s a chance that he looks a bit like this…

Which was taken from his MySpace pictures, so it’s him or someone he knows!

But what is very clear about Severence is his love for ambient, ethereal dub-techno, IDM and chill. His website boasts an array of mixes featuring the likes of Echospace, Yagya, Quantec, Gas, Pole, Bvdub, Robert Henke and such purveyors of the deep dub-techno side of things.

Severence’s own productions (which you can hear on his MySpace) have also been released through Shoreless Recordings on their “Selected Moments I” compilation, of which there are only 100 odd in existence. But I urge you to scour discogs and ebay for a copy – from what I’ve read and heard it’s truly exquisite.

His own productions have the same sweeping, washing highly-crafted synth sounds, over subtle 4-4 beats and filtered noise pads that got me hooked on Quantec’s (Sven Schienhammer) productions, and it was in fact through Quantec that I discovered Severence. I don’t know how familiar they are with each other’s work – but I’d expect them to have at least spoken, what with being label-mates an’ all. Quantec is a whole new post however, so I’ll save that for now.

I really just wanted to highlight this artist, and reccomend checking out his range of mixes – all downloadable through his site.

New look, feel and direction for the blog

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

I’ve decided to give Sitting Ovation a little bit of a makeover. I’m still ironing out bits here and there, but I’m more or less up and running with the new design.

My reason for the re-vamp was that I’ve decided to slightly change the direction of the blog. Not only will I be reviewing things when I get the chance, but I’ll hopefully be making more smaller posts about tracks I want to highlight without writing a review, and posts that don’t always contain a review in them.

I’m eager to branch the posts out in to more dicsussion, and opinion as opposed to strictly reviews and exposure, so this now includes night info, releases, opinions, top tens, new mixes, albums downloads and just about anything that fits.

I’ll be keeping the posts and text on the smoother, deeper end of the dubstep and dub-techno spectrum, but don’t expect a limited view. I just like to specialise a little.
