Website -http://www.rakkas.org/

1 – Go to the MySpace and listen to “Looking for Love” it’s a beautiful deep dubbed-out crackly, pristine sci-fi sound-scape of a track with a really nice bouncy beat and some very well crafted atmosphere.

2 – Check out the rest of the incredibly well crafted tracks available, and jump on to their site for some mixes. Then hold tight for a vinyl release of their debut EP – coming soon!!

Jakes – Part of Me

Check out “Part of Me” – the sample in the MySpace player.

I’ve just fallen in love with this track. The reversed synths, the cheeky synth stabs on the loop, and the whole feel of the sounds involved. It’s lush, dubby and still a proper rolling track. Amazing stuff. I don’t have much more to say about this. No release info, no further track info from the producer yet – but I’ll get on it, and see what I can dig up for you!

New Collective to push deep, dubby & chilled sound

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

I don’t normally post news here as such – to keep it to the reviews, but this seems relevant considering the artists involved have featured here, and represent a sound that I’m very much in to at the moment.

Echodub is the name of the collective.

You can check the site out, and there’s a single release for now, with more coming soon.

MK2 & Mr Curtamos – Bringit Back

The other evening I was very kindly sent a couple of dubs from a producer based over in Georgia who goes by the name of MK2. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that he had collaborated with a producer by the name of “Mr Curtamos” who had previously worked on a remix of Santogold which I had very much enjoyed.

So here I am, listening to a collaboration of his with the aforementioned MK2, and let me tell you… It’s a belter.

Nu-Urban Music – Dubstep business on the way

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Nu Urban Music – the phrase on its own could be a nod to the cliched RnB scene with its bling, its rappers, soul-vocalists and its altogether rather crummy existence. (I’m not a big RnB fan) However; take ‘Nu Urban Music’ and place it in the right context, and you have the Drum & Bass behemoth distributer, store and general audio extravagansa who have just decided to expand their weighty wings to covet some serious dubstep.

I say serious, I mean basically deadly. You might already be familiar with one of the latest Caspa remixes (of TC’s Where’s My Money) and if not – let’s just say there’s some heavy-duty releases coming from Nu-Urban very soon.

Allow me to elaborate… (brace yourself this is a monster post!!)

DFRNT – The DFRNT Engine EP

Friday, September 5th, 2008

I’m not going to make a big thing of this, because I have done elsewhere – so I’ll just gently nudge you in the direction of the promo site – and hope that you’ve got the sense to do yourself a favour and take a listen!!

Kfka – Crge / Cut The Box Man

Friday, September 5th, 2008

http://www.myspace.com/vptys

Finland is apparently the most sparsely populated country in the European Union. If you could sum that up in a single track, yet still present the immediacy and heaviness of a nice dubstep bassline at the same time, you’d have Kfka’s track “Crge”

The track starts with hardly anything. A simple filtered noise stab, that develops through blips, sub and a well-rounded, but far from death-defying drumloop. As the short vocal sample echoes through the track creating that space, the bassline wub-wub’s away slowly, building over 4 and 8 bars to present this agressive sound that you’d have never seen coming to begin with.

Foiled Torsos – Urban Decay / Vital

Friday, September 5th, 2008

http://www.myspace.com/foiledtorsos

“Urban Decay” begins with the sound of some post-apocalyptic landscape. There’s this very evident noise-loop which just puts the whole track in some state of… well… decay I suppose. I say that like it’s a bad thing – but I feel like without it, and some of the other ambience built up in the mix – It wouldn’t be quite the same track.

The basis of the loop is a semi-subtle sub, and a minimal percussion/drum-loop that carries some rather eerie synths through the track. There’s something of a lack of breakdowns, or variation – but I get the feeling this one’s all about building up that almost hypnotic loop and getting entirely lost when the breakdown finally dissipates and leaves you with nothing but that noise. After that there’s nothing left to do but fire that monotonous loop back on and nod your head to the sounds of a crumbling environment.

Tha Doc – Champion Dub / From Home

Friday, September 5th, 2008

http://www.myspace.com/thadiggydiggydoc

The Doc seems to have it more or less nailed down. A solid catalogue of great tracks that span enough of a range to give you the confidence that he can produce the goods when required. Presented with such a vareity, I’ve chosen to highlight Champion Dub and From Home.

“Champion Dub” is a fairly dubbed-out minimal track, but instead of the long etheral pads that some opt for, Tha Doc has favoured a rather more varied selection of random blips, noises and pads to accompany his perhaps a little agressive vocal sample.
